Small-batch bed linen
Thread Count is a two-room workshop on the east side of Portland. We buy cotton and flax by the roll, dye in batches small enough to watch, and sew sheets to fit the mattress you already own. Everything on this page is on the shelf today.
From roll to folded set
Three steps, all of them in the same building. Nothing is cut before the cloth is dyed, and nothing ships before it has been washed once.
Step one
Greige cotton and European flax come in by the roll, not by the container. A roll makes a short run of sets, which is why a color shows up for a season and then goes quiet.
Step two
Indigo and madder move a little between runs. Two sets bought a year apart will not match exactly. We would rather say that here than argue about it later.
Step three
Side seams are French seams, so no raw edge sits against your leg. Every piece is washed and dried once before it is folded. That first wash is why linen arrives soft instead of board stiff.

Cotton percale

Cool, dry, a little crisp. The sheet you want in August. One thread over one, and it softens with every wash without going limp.
Cotton sateen

Sateen floats four threads over one, so the face is smooth and holds the light. Warmer than percale. This is the set people move to in October.
European flax

Flax, stonewashed twice so it arrives soft rather than stiff. It wrinkles. That is what linen does, and we would rather say so now.

The same flax as the sheet set, with coconut buttons along the foot and cotton ties in all four corners so the duvet stops bunching at one end.
Cotton waffle

Cotton waffle, thin enough for a summer night and warm enough on its own until about November. It doubles as the throw at the foot of the bed.
Cotton sateen

Sateen cut generous, so a fat duvet still fills the corners instead of leaving two flat ears at the top. Buttons at the foot, ties inside.
Cotton percale

Two cases, envelope closure, no zip to catch hair. Same cloth as the Rainshadow set, sold on their own because cases wear out first.
European flax

Flax cases with a flange edge. Sleep on linen for a week before you decide about it. The first two nights are not the whole story.

Prices are for the set as listed. When a size sells out it stays out until the next run of that cloth, and the card here comes down rather than sitting there greyed out.

Measure once
American mattress sizes, in inches. Our fitted sheets take a mattress up to 15 inches deep, topper included. Measure the depth before you order: a pillow-top can add four inches you did not count on.

Between two sizes? Take the larger one. A queen flat sheet on a full mattress hangs a little long and nobody minds. The other way round pulls out at four in the morning.
After you get it home
Every piece is washed once here before it is folded, so the first wash at home is yours to do whenever you like. Warm water, ordinary detergent, no softener. Softener coats cotton and stops it drinking.
Up to 104 Fahrenheit, 40 Celsius. Hotter water shrinks cotton past what we cut for.
Bleach eats flax fibre and turns indigo a green nobody asked for. Oxygen brighteners are fine.
One dot on the dial. High heat is what breaks elastic on a fitted sheet, not the years of sleeping.
Pull flax from the dryer while it still feels cool and hang it. It finishes drying flat and stays soft.
Percale presses up sharp if that is your thing. Linen is meant to look lived in. Both are fine.
The solvent strips the wash we put in. Your machine at home does a better job for nothing.
Stains: cold water first, always. Hot water sets protein stains into cotton and then no amount of scrubbing brings them out. Wine on linen comes out with cold water and salt more often than people expect.
Getting it to you, sending it back
Orders leave the workshop within two business days. Everything goes out in a cotton bag inside a paper mailer, and the bag is worth keeping for the off-season set.
Portland customers can collect at the door instead. Choose pickup at checkout and we will write back with a time.
Free over $150. Below that it is a flat $9 anywhere in the United States. We ship USPS Priority, which is two to four days from Portland to most addresses.
Two business days. If a piece is cut to order because you asked for a depth we do not stock, we tell you the date in writing before we take payment.
Yes, within 30 days, as long as it has not been washed and comes back in its bag. Bed linen is close to the skin and we cannot resell a washed set, which is the whole reason for that line.
You do on a change of mind: $9 off the refund. We do when the fault is ours, and we send the label the same day you write.
Send the set back and we post the new size as soon as it lands. No second shipping charge. If the price differs we settle the difference either way.
Tell us within the first month and we replace it. Slubs in flax and small shade shifts between batches are the cloth behaving normally, so those are not flaws, but a dropped seam or a torn hem is on us.
Space held for a real customer. The shop has been open a short time and there is nothing honest to put here yet. We would rather leave the box empty than write words nobody said. Once you have slept on a set for a month, tell us and we will ask to quote you.
Odd mattresses welcome
Antique beds, boat berths, a mattress with a topper that pushes past fifteen inches. Tell us the three measurements and the cloth you want, and we will price it and say how long the run takes.
Cut-to-measure pieces are made from the same rolls, so colour matches whatever else you own from us. They are final sale, and we say that plainly before you pay.
